The pace of foreclosures jumped more than 32 percent in the Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater area, comparing this May to the same month in 2008. Just over 6,100 area homes fell into some form of foreclosure in May — that's one home in every 192 — according to real estate statistics firm RealtyTrac.

But before anybody celebrates, the number of filings -- on 321,480 U.S. homes -- was still up 18 percent from the same time last year, according to RealtyTrac, an online company that tracks foreclosure properties.

The spike in filings probably was related to the expiration of several foreclosure moratoriums across the country, said Daren Blomquist, a RealtyTrac spokesman. Many of the latest filings represented lenders starting the foreclosure process on delinquent homeowners, he said.
